The window is the time to read the captain pick ledger, the scoring table, and the squad build. The window length varies by format. T20 open windows are short, often less than four hours. ODI open windows are longer, often an entire day. Test open windows span several days.
The squad lock window
The squad lock window opens at the toss. The window closes at the squad lock time the operator publishes on app. The window length is short, typically 15 to 30 minutes. Edit the squad before the lock window opens; do not edit during the lock window. Build the squad ahead of the toss so the lock window is a non-event.
The contest settlement window
The contest settlement window opens after the match completes. The window closes when the operator settles the leaderboard. The settlement window length varies by format and by operator queue. The captain weight is the multiplier the captain armband carries on the scoring table. The weight is 2x in the standard contest; the weight may differ in tournament contests where the operator adjusts the multiplier for the season. Verify the weight on app before locking the armband. The captain is the largest single swing in any contest, so the weight is the most important value to confirm.
Top-order batter in Test carries the highest captain weight because Test matches reward long innings. Pace bowler in ODI carries the highest captain weight in ODI because ODI matches reward wicket-taking spells. Powerplay batter in T20 carries the highest captain weight in T20 because T20 matches reward boundary hitting in the powerplay. All-rounder in mixed formats carries the highest captain weight in mixed formats because mixed formats reward both batting and bowling.

Reading the pitch report
The pitch report is published on the BCCI / IPL feed on the morning of the match. The report is short and includes a one-line expected behaviour. The report covers grass cover, moisture, and cracks. A green pitch favours pace. A flat pitch favours batting. A slow pitch favours spin. A dry pitch favours spin. A wet pitch favours seam.
The pitch report is the fourth input after the fixture line, the contest list, and the format-specific captain weight. Verify the pitch report on the BCCI / IPL feed before locking the squad. The pitch report changes the captain weight; a green pitch reduces the captain weight on a top-order batter captain pick and increases it on a pace bowler captain pick.

The toss call is published on the BCCI / IPL feed at the toss. The toss call settles the squad lock window. The toss call also settles the batting order, the bowling order, and the fielding positions. Verify the toss on app before the squad lock. The toss changes the captain weight on a dew-laden evening; the chasing side carries the captain weight.
Reading the playing XI
The playing XI is published on the BCCI / IPL feed shortly after the toss. The playing XI settles the squad build. A leaked playing XI is not a confirmed playing XI; the BCCI / IPL feed publishes the confirmed XI on the morning of the match. Build the squad against the confirmed XI, not the leaked one.
The playing XI carries the role-by-role reads: top-order batters, middle-order batters, all-rounders, wicketkeeper, pace bowlers, spin bowlers. The role cap applies per role. Verify the playing XI on the BCCI / IPL feed before locking the squad.
